Rail Tips - Tip 7

Overtaking trains

One of the reasons why a lot of British railways trains are late is because on its busy networks high speed trains can often get trapped behind slow running short distance trains, and cannot go any faster than 112kph. A similar problem may be experienced in transport tycoon if you have a busy network with trains running at different speeds. What you can do about it is to build overtaking sections along your railway. This means you don't have to upgrade all your trains to the maximum speed, and fast trains to get the benefit of the extra speed. This is how you build an overtaking section on a double track:

Here is a 177 kph train over-taking a 112 kph train. Make sure signals leading up to the overtaking section are as close together as possible, so a fast train follows very shortly behind a slow one. Take careful note of the signalling, the 112 kph train will have to wait for the other train to overtake. Also make sure bi-directional signals are used on entry to the overtaking section otherwise it will not work.
