Rail Tips - Tip 3

Building Railways around a station efficiently

The next trick is to attach the track to a station. For the terminus station the track the train leaves on has to be different to the track it comes on, so at some stage there has to be a crossover:

The only problem with this, is that only one train can occupy the crossover section at a time. Therefore only one train can enter or leave the station at once. This is fine if trains aren't visiting the station often. However when a lot of trains are going to the station, it causes a major bottleneck. The way around it? Don't make it a terminus station, make it a through station, that way you avoid a crossover:

This means there is much less of a bottleneck, trains can leave and enter the station at the same time. Note If all four tracks are unavailable, the train goes on a circular tour where it circles until a track is free. Be warned though, too many trains on the circle and the whole system will grind to a halt. This is a famous solution in the transport tycoon community, it is likely to be seen in many places. Note as an extra tip, if this is the only station to a Steel Mill for example, don't have more than three Steel trains. The reason for this is because a steel mill only produces steel when it is supplied with iron ore. If you have 4 steel trains there is a risk that all 4 tracks will be occupied by them. This means iron ore trains cannot enter the station, which means no steel is produced, which means the steel trains just sit there, and profits grind to a halt. The same applies to goods trains with sawmills, factories and all other secondry producing industries.
