Rail Tips - Tip 2
Railways with more than one train
Sometimes long distances are crossed, and there is a lot of cargo. We can only make limited profit from one train, so what do we do? We can add another train. Instead of building another railway and station system, the need for infrastructure can be saved by having two trains on one system. Competitors usually do this when connecting stations that are far apart, in order to ensure the ratings don't slip. They do this by having double track stations at each end, and two passing places along the track. Competitors do this strictly, no more, no less that two passing places, and two trains, and two double tracked stations. Fortunately, being human the player has an advantage in this area. Having passing places for two, even three trains is fine, more than that and you suffer from bottle neck syndrome when this happens:
This is a slight problem, it means you have to watch over your railway the whole time, not giving you the opportunity to build elsewhere in case this happens and you start loosing money. Not to mention this is inefficient, as trains will have to often wait for another train to pass before it can leave. However this is all solved relatively easily:
Oh yes, just like railways in reality, you have a double track system, which is wonderful as trains can travel in opposite directions fine. The Directional signals do that. If you build lots of signals all the way along the track, the amount of trains you can run is enormous, as much as one train for every 6 sections of track you have, if you are running a long route, think how many sections of track that is!
